WHERE TO STAY IN ATHENS
If you want to be close to the Acropolis and many other archaeological sites then you can stay in the areas of Plaka, Syntagma, Makrigianni, Monastiraki, Thission, Acropolis and Omonia. Everything you need (including transportation, shops, restaurants, and nightlife) will be within walking distance.
RESTAURANTS IN ATHENS (AREA OF PLAKA)
Psara Fish: It is one of the oldest tavernas in the Plaka, dating back to 1898. Actually it is my favorite restaurant in the Plaka. It is on the corner of Erotocritou and Erehtheos street.
Byzantino: which is the restaurant of choice for many locals in the Plaka.
The Plaka Restaurant: They specialize in Greek oven dishes, grilled meats and fish.
Eden Vegetarean Restaurant: If you are a vegetarean then that is the best option located on the corner of Misicleos and Lissiou streets.
RESTAURANTS IN ATHENS (NEAR PLAKA)
Socrates Prison Taverna: Excellent grilled chicken, roast lamb and other meats, and great wine. It's a little expensive and the servings are small but it has a nice atmosphere. Make sure you order your wine first because service can be a little slow sometimes and it takes the edge off waiting. It's on Roberto Galli street.
Palia Taverna: This is a famous old taverna, behind the old Olympic Stadium. The food is excellent.
Strophi: It is on the rooftop of an old building in Makriganni, a short walk from the Plaka, with a great view of the Acropolis. The food is excellent and you never know which famous dignitary or celebrity will be sitting next to you.
The area of Psiri has a number of good restaurants, bars and cafes and really jumps on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday during the day. |
