Jewish Cemeteries in Athens & Thessalonica

CEMETERY OF THESSALONICA

The Nazis destroyed the ancient Jewish cemetery of Thessalonica that covered about 300,000 sq.m. in the area where the University Campus is situated today. The graves were looted and tombstones were scattered all over the city.
After the liberation, the Community founded a new cemetery in the Stavroupolis area. Some tombstones from the old cemetery were carried there and a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust has been erected.

CEMETERY OF ATHENS

The oldest Jewish cemetery of the community occupies a part of the first Christian cemetery of Athens. The graves of this cemetery date back to the early 20th century. Since World War II, the cemetery is no longer in use because it is full. Area/Capacity: 2,500 sq. m. The cemetery is surrounded by a wall and is totally protected.

THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL INSIDE THE CEMETERY OF ATHENS

The second Jewish cemetery in Athens occupies a part of the third Christian cemetery in Nikaia (an area outside Athens). Its use started just after the War when the Municipality of Athens gave this area to the Jewish community. The cemetery is at present used by the Athens Jewish Community. Area/Capacity: 20,000 sq. m. Actual It is protected by a wurrounding wall and it is guarded. The recent earthquake caused serious damages to the small building situated inside the cemetery used for burial services. Restoration works are needed on the small building situated inside the cemetery and also general preservation works for the whole area, and for the oldest of the tombstones.
